The Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) announced on the 8th that it has filed damages lawsuits against the individuals who posted the 'Shinsegae Department Store bomb threat' and the 'Yatap Station murder threat.'
A KNPA official explained, "To dispel concerns about indiscriminate lawsuits, we comprehensively considered the seriousness of the cases, the scale of police mobilization, and the level of public criticism."
Previously, in August, a man in his 20s, identified as Mr. A, was arrested for public threats after posting a comment on a YouTube news video about the Shinsegae Department Store bomb, stating, 'Tomorrow at 5 PM, Shinsegae will be blown up.' Earlier, in November last year, another man in his 20s, Mr. B, was apprehended for threats after posting on an online anonymous community with the title, 'On Monday at Yatap Station, I will stab and kill 30 people.'
In response, the police deployed significant resources, including local officers, the Mobile Police Unit, the Commando Unit, and the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit, from the moment the reports were received until the suspects were apprehended. This diverted resources from regular policing, with the resulting impact falling directly on citizens.
As a result, the KNPA determined that public funds totaling 12,567,881 KRW were unnecessarily spent on the Shinsegae Department Store bomb threat case, and 55,051,212 KRW on the Yatap Station murder threat case. The agency has decided to seek damages from the perpetrators equivalent to these amounts.
The KNPA stated that it will continue to respond strictly to public threats and false reports, not only with criminal charges but also by actively pursuing civil damages claims.
