[Financial News] The individual who impersonated President Lee Jae Myung and posted a fake public statement online has turned himself in to the police.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) announced on the 2nd that it had apprehended Mr. A, the author of the fake public statement impersonating President Lee, and is investigating the circumstances.
Mr. A surrendered at around 12:30 p.m. the previous day. Recently, a fabricated public statement, purportedly from President Lee, was posted online, falsely announcing an increase in the Capital Gains Tax Rate on Foreign Stocks.
The SMPA has formed its own Counter-Disinformation Task Force (TF) to respond to such crimes. An SMPA official stated, "We will not only pursue those who produce and distribute false and manipulated information, but also track down those behind them and take strict action under a zero tolerance policy."
The official added, "We urge the public to actively report any illegal activities, such as the spread of false or manipulated information, both online and offline, to the police or relevant authorities." The official further emphasized, "Even actions taken out of simple curiosity or as a prank may be subject to severe punishment under relevant laws, so please be mindful."
