[The Financial News] A man in his 20s was arrested by police after secretly placing a PET bottle filled with urine on a beverage shelf at a convenience store in Japan.
According to Japan Today and other foreign media on the 23rd, Funabashi Police in Chiba Prefecture arrested Mr. A (26) in May on charges of business obstruction.
Mr. A is accused of placing a PET bottle containing his urine on the beverage shelf at a convenience store in Chiba Prefecture at around 11:50 a.m. on May 24.
Investigations revealed that Mr. A secretly displayed the PET bottle, labeled 'tea' on the outside, filled with his urine in the beverage section.
The bottle containing Mr. A's urine was later sold to a customer, Mr. B, who immediately reported to the convenience store after noticing a strong stench upon opening the cap.
The convenience store reported the incident to the police, who then launched an investigation.
The convenience store had to inspect all beverages displayed in the store, which disrupted business operations.
The police, who began the investigation, tracked down the suspect by analyzing the store's Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and arrested Mr. A on November 21.
During police questioning, Mr. A reportedly stated, "I was stressed because things weren't going well at work," and added, "I only thought of it as a prank and had no intention of disrupting business."
Meanwhile, after the incident became public, Japanese netizens reacted with comments such as, "Pathetic," "This is completely incomprehensible behavior," "He should be severely punished as this poses a serious threat to public hygiene," "I'm worried about copycat crimes," and "It's really scary."
