[Financial News] The police have launched an investigation into fake accounts on social networking services (SNS) that impersonate the President of South Korea and solicit money.
The Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) National Office of Investigation announced on the 1st that fake accounts impersonating the President of South Korea and demanding money have been identified on SNS. The Phishing Scam Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) has begun an investigation, and strict punishment will be imposed in accordance with the law and principles.
According to the police, these fake accounts, which illegally use the President's title and name, post official photos and videos of the President of South Korea. It has been determined that such accounts send direct messages (DMs) to specific individuals to request money.
Last week, the SMPA Cyber Crime Investigation Unit also began investigating a post circulating on online forums that impersonated the President of South Korea and, in the form of a public address, falsely claimed there would be an increase in capital gains tax on overseas stocks and the introduction of a new property holding tax.
A police official stated, "All phishing scams occur in online spaces, and recently, not only unauthorized use but also technologies such as Deepfake and DeepVoice are being employed. We urge the public to be especially cautious of various types of false information impersonating the President of South Korea, and if you are asked for money online, do not respond and report it to the police immediately."
