A representative from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) stated at a regular briefing on the 1st, "We have received server log records from Coupang and are currently analyzing them," adding, "We have secured the IP address used by the suspect and are tracking it."
Regarding the main suspect, who is believed to be a former employee of Chinese nationality, the police said they are still verifying the details. An SMPA official explained, "There are several possibilities, and we are analyzing the submitted materials," noting that the investigation includes the possibility that the suspect is of Chinese nationality.
On the subject of the threatening email sent to Coupang, the police commented, "Technical analysis based on the IP address is currently required," and clarified that the sender has not yet been identified.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the SMPA began its investigation after receiving a complaint from Coupang regarding the customer data leak on the 25th. The complaint submitted by Coupang did not specify a defendant, listing the perpetrator as 'unknown.' However, as the incident was revealed to involve an employee, it exposed vulnerabilities in internal management.
Coupang has so far confirmed that approximately 33.7 million customer accounts have been compromised. This represents the personal information of three out of every four adults in South Korea. The leaked data includes customer names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, and some order information.
Police are also analyzing video footage related to sexual harassment allegations involving Kyung-tae Jang of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK). An SMPA official said, "We have obtained some footage of the restaurant's interior submitted by the person who recorded it and are working to secure additional materials."
The SMPA is investigating after receiving a complaint alleging that Representative Jang committed sexual harassment at a restaurant in Yeouido. At the time, Jang was reportedly present at a dinner gathering with aides from a National Assembly member's office.
The police have not yet questioned the complainant. Although Representative Jang has expressed his intention to file a counter-complaint for false accusation, it has not yet been submitted.
