A massive data breach has occurred at Coupang, the leading e-commerce (electronic commerce) company in South Korea, with over 30 million records exposed. Coupang has confirmed that approximately 33.7 million customer accounts have been compromised. This figure represents the personal information of three out of every four adults in the country and is believed to be nearly equivalent to Coupang’s entire user base. [The Financial News] The leak of names, phone numbers, addresses, and other information of more than 30 million Coupang customers appears to have been the work of an insider rather than the result of external hacking.
According to police and other sources on the 30th, the customer data was reportedly leaked by a former Coupang employee of Chinese nationality.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Cyber Investigation Unit received a complaint from Coupang regarding the incident on the 25th and has launched an investigation into the personal data breach.
However, the employee in question is a foreign national and is believed to have already left Coupang and departed from South Korea.
The complaint submitted by Coupang to the police did not specify a suspect, listing the accused as an unidentified individual.
In a statement released on the 20th, Coupang said, "It has been confirmed that there was unauthorized access to customer personal information," adding, "We have found no evidence of external intrusion into Coupang’s systems or internal networks."
