The Prosecution Service has sought a five-year prison sentence for a woman in her 20s who demanded a large sum of money from footballer Son Heung-min (33, Los Angeles Football Club) by claiming she was pregnant.
On the 27th, Judge Jeongbin Lim of the Seoul Central District Court presided over the final hearing for Ms. Yang, a woman in her 20s indicted and detained on charges of blackmail and attempted blackmail, and Mr. Yong, a man in his 40s charged with attempted blackmail.
On this day, the Prosecution Service requested a five-year prison sentence for Ms. Yang and a two-year prison sentence for Mr. Yong.
Ms. Yang, who was in a romantic relationship with Son Heung-min, allegedly sent him an ultrasound image last June, claimed to be pregnant, and extorted 300 million won from him. Mr.
Yong, her boyfriend, is also accused of demanding 70 million won from Son in March of this year as part of an attempted blackmail scheme. In May, Son Heung-min filed a blackmail complaint against the two. The Gangnam Police Station arrested them on the 14th of the same month, detained them on the 17th, and referred the case to the Prosecution Service on the 22nd.
Investigations revealed that Ms. Yang initially tried to demand money from another man by claiming she was pregnant. When he did not respond, she told Son Heung-min that she was pregnant with his child and demanded money.
Furthermore, after spending all the money she had extorted and facing financial difficulties, Ms. Yang attempted to blackmail Son Heung-min again through Mr. Yong, with whom she had entered into a romantic relationship.
After receiving the case, the Prosecution Service conducted additional searches and obtained call records. They determined that the second blackmail attempt, previously believed to have been committed by Mr. Yong alone between March and May, was actually a conspiracy between Ms.
Yang and Mr. Yong.
At a closed hearing held on the 19th, Son Heung-min appeared in person as a witness. During his testimony, the court had Ms.
Yang moved to a separate room to keep her apart from Son.
