"I Thought Kimchi Would Be Written as 'Paocai'..." Netflix Uses 'Shinchi' in Chinese Subtitles

[Financial News] Netflix, which has previously been criticized for incorrectly translating Kimchi as 'Paocai' (泡菜), has delivered some positive news. In the popular variety show 'Physical: Asia,' which has recently drawn attention, the Chinese subtitles correctly use 'Shinchi' (辛奇) for Kimchi, earning praise from viewers.

Seo Kyoung-duk, a professor at Sungshin Women's University, stated on the 27th, "On the 22nd, which was Kimchi Day, several netizens reported this to me," adding, "Upon checking, I found that episode 12 of 'Physical: Asia' used 'Shinchi' in the Chinese subtitles for Kimchi."

In 2021, the Korean government amended the 'Guidelines for the Translation and Romanization of Public Terms,' officially designating 'Shinchi' (辛奇) as the correct Chinese term for Kimchi.
Professor Seo pointed out, "In China, there is a continuous effort to distort the origins of Kimchi by labeling it as 'Paocai,' a phenomenon known as the Kimchi Controversy."

Amid these circumstances, global OTT platforms like Netflix have faced ongoing criticism for mistranslations that appear to support China's claims.
Professor Seo remarked, "Netflix's adoption of 'Shinchi' is a very welcome development," and emphasized, "As a global platform, Netflix's use of the official Korean standard will play a significant role in clarifying Kimchi’s identity."

He continued, "Netflix's influence extends worldwide. This change is a symbolic move that undermines unfounded claims within China and helps spread the correct standard internationally."
