[The Financial News] The owner of a pizza restaurant in Italy posted a video on his social media mocking and criticizing Taiwanese tourists, but later apologized after the video sparked controversy.
According to international media including the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong on the 27th, Mr. A, who runs a pizzeria in Tuscany, Italy, recently filmed and uploaded a video criticizing a group of 16 Taiwanese tourists for ordering only five pizzas.
At the time, the 16 Taiwanese tourists ordered five thin-crust pizzas and three beers.
Mr. A filmed the tourists while they were dining and insulted them in Italian. Unaware of the language, the tourists smiled and waved at the camera.
In the video, Mr. A said, "These tourists make me angry. There are 16 of them, but they only ordered five pizzas and three beers. It's unbelievable. This is too much." He then mocked them, saying, "Get lost. I don't care about you."
Mr. B, who was part of the tour, criticized, "Our guide asked Mr. A in advance if it was okay for some elderly tourists to order a small amount of food due to jet lag and lack of appetite. Mr. A nodded in agreement, so we placed a small order, but he mocked us behind our backs."
After the video spread and the controversy grew, Mr. A deleted the original post and uploaded an apology video on the 14th. He stated, "I apologize to the Taiwanese tourists. I'm just a playful Italian." He added, "You are wonderful people. I love China and I love Taiwan too."
Meanwhile, the outlet quoted an anonymous Italian chef as saying, "In Italy, it's customary for each person to order their own pizza." The chef noted, "This seems to have happened because the owner and the customers were unaware of these cultural differences."
