[Financial News] The death of a Korean who fought against Russia in Ukraine has been confirmed.
On the 27th, an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "The funeral for a Korean national who died while serving as a volunteer soldier in Ukraine was held in Kyiv on the 25th local time."
According to reports, Ukrainian authorities notified South Korea of the death and funeral arrangements. A consul from the local Korean embassy attended the ceremony.
While the government did not disclose the deceased's identity, it is known that the individual was a man in his 50s, surnamed Kim, who died in May during a clash with Russian forces in Donetsk.
Previously, Agence France-Presse (AFP) published a photo dated the 25th showing a Ukrainian soldier kneeling in front of a coffin draped with the Flag of South Korea (Taegeukgi) in Kyiv, explaining, "Soldiers are paying their respects to the coffin of a fallen Korean volunteer."
There have been previous reports, including from Russian authorities, that some Koreans joined the Ukraine war as volunteers and that some lost their lives. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had maintained it was still verifying the information. The ministry official added, "The local embassy is providing necessary consular assistance to the bereaved family."
