[The Financial News] Controversy has erupted after a men's clothing brand in the PRC was accused of including a sexist phrase on its laundry care label.
According to local media such as Guangming Daily on the 27th, a consumer in the PRC recently posted on a social networking service (SNS), claiming, "The label on clothing I recently purchased contains an inappropriate phrase that discriminates between men and women," along with a photo.
The published photo shows a clothing label stating, "Leave this garment to the woman you love, she knows everything," written in both Chinese and English. Notably, the English phrase contains a typo, with 'beloved' misspelled as 'beoved.'
As the controversy grew, the brand acknowledged, "We recognize that the phrase in question was an inappropriate expression that could be misunderstood as sexist." The company explained, "Because some male customers are often unfamiliar with the materials and care instructions for vintage garments made from special fabrics, we simply intended to suggest that such items be cared for together with someone attentive."
The brand further added, "Regardless of gender, we ask that everyone pay close attention to the washing and care instructions for their clothing."
Despite the company's explanation, consumers continue to criticize the brand, saying, "It is problematic that the 'attentive person' the company refers to is assumed to be a woman," and "This mindset relegates women to domestic labor."
