[Financial News] Prosecutors have requested an eight-year prison sentence for a parent in their 40s who repeatedly broke into the high school attended by their daughter and stole midterm and final exam papers.
At a trial held on the 26th before Judge Son Young-eon of the Andong Branch of Daegu District Court, prosecutors asked for Mr. A, who was indicted and detained, to be sentenced to eight years in prison on charges including special theft and nighttime burglary.
Additionally, for Mr. B, a temporary teacher in their 30s, and Mr. C, the school’s administrative manager also in their 30s, who were charged with conspiring with Mr. A or aiding and abetting the crimes (special theft, nighttime burglary, and aiding and abetting nighttime burglary), prosecutors requested sentences of seven years in prison and a forfeiture of 31.5 million won for Mr. B, and three years in prison for Mr. C.
Ms. D, Mr. A’s teenage daughter, was indicted for pre-memorizing questions and answers and taking the exams despite knowing the papers were illegally leaked (obstruction of business by fraudulent means). Prosecutors sought a prison sentence of up to three years and at least two years for her.
Prosecutors explained, "Mr. A committed the crime out of a misguided love for his child, denied the charges during the investigation, and destroyed evidence."
Regarding Mr. B, they noted, "Despite being in a position to guide students on the right path, he stole exam papers for three years and received 30 million won."
In his final statement, Mr. A said, "I apologize to the school and the parents who were harmed by my actions. Under the pretense of doing this for my child and out of a misguided desire to help her succeed, I committed a crime."
He continued, "Although I am a mother who brought my child to court, I hope for leniency so that I can live with my child again."
Ms. D stated, "I sincerely apologize to everyone who was affected by this incident. I am sorry for hurting my friends who studied hard alongside me."
According to investigators, Mr. A, together with Mr. B, is accused of unlawfully entering a high school in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, where Ms. D was enrolled, on ten occasions from 2023 until recently, and stealing midterm and final exam papers.
It was found that Ms. D, who studied in advance using the leaked exam papers, never missed first place in her high school academic rankings.
The crimes committed by Mr. A and others were discovered on July 4, during the final exam period, when the private security system was activated.
The sentencing hearing for those involved is scheduled for 2 p.m. on January 14 next year.
