[Financial News] The Prosecution Service has sought a prison sentence for Kim Bong-hyun, former chairman of Star Mobility, who was brought to trial on charges of providing illegal political funds to former lawmaker Ki Dong-min of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) and others.
On the 26th, during a sentencing hearing presided over by Judge Seo Young-woo at the Seoul Southern District Court, the Prosecution Service requested an eight-month prison term for both Kim Bong-hyun and Kang-se Lee, former CEO of Star Mobility, who were indicted for violating the Political Funds Act.
Kim Bong-hyun and Kang-se Lee are accused of delivering a total of 160 million won in cash and valuables to four individuals—former lawmaker Ki Dong-min, lawmaker Lee Su-jin of the DPK, former Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kim Young-choon, and former DPK preliminary candidate Kim Kap-soo—around the time of the 20th National Assembly election in 2016.
However, in September, all four—former lawmaker Ki, lawmaker Lee, former minister Kim, and former candidate Kim—were acquitted in the first trial. At the time, the court ruled that 'the statements and notes provided by Kim Bong-hyun, which were key evidence presented by the Prosecution Service, were not deemed credible.'
The first verdict for Kim Bong-hyun and Kang-se Lee is scheduled to be delivered at 2 p.m. on the 17th of next month.
