[Financial News] The story of a Brazilian influencer whose face was severely disfigured due to an illegal cosmetic procedure has come to light.
According to The Sun on the 26th, Juliana Oliveira (32) confessed, "After undergoing a nightmare surgery in 2017, I ended up with a 'Frankenstein-style' appearance."
She explained, "I believed I was receiving a silicone-based dermal filler, but without my consent, staff at the illegal clinic injected my face with 21 shots of Mineral Oil and a relaxant."
Juliana said, "Because of my swollen face, it was difficult to find a job," adding, "Above all, I was terrified at the thought that I might have to live with this face for the rest of my life."
Over the past eight years, she searched for a doctor who could reconstruct her face, and eventually underwent reconstructive surgery at IndiAnapolis Hospital in São Paulo, Brazil.
Dr. Thiago, who performed the surgery, stated, "The operation to remove Mineral Oil from Juliana's face was successfully completed," and explained, "To restore her appearance as closely as possible to the original, she will need to undergo additional surgeries over the coming months."
Juliana, who goes by the name 'Juju du Pix' on social networking service (SNS), has gained more than 47,000 followers. She shares her journey of rebuilding her life and face, posting updates on her ongoing transformation.
Her SNS also features photos from before the illegal procedure, showing her as a brown-haired beauty.
Side Effects of Illegal Dermal Filler Procedures
Dermal filler procedures are a cosmetic method that uses simple injections to enhance the nose bridge or add volume to the face.
When performed properly by a certified plastic surgeon using approved dermal fillers, the procedure is safe and effective for achieving a youthful appearance or desired image changes. However, some people opt for illegal procedures due to cost concerns.
Illegal procedures may use substances such as paraffin, soybean oil, or industrial silicone oil, which can lead to serious complications.
Those who receive injections with illegal dermal fillers may experience skin deformation, necrosis, inflammatory reactions, or even skin cancer. While approved fillers safely dissolve in the body, these substances remain and can continuously trigger foreign body reactions, making complete removal through surgery difficult in many cases.
If the foreign body reaction has already caused skin necrosis or damaged muscles and nerves, even reconstructive surgery may not fully restore the affected areas.
Dr. Agustin Pozo of Harvard University warned, "Receiving illegal dermal filler injections simply because they are cheap is extremely dangerous," adding, "Injecting large amounts of filler over time or using contaminated materials can result in tumor formation."
He further explained, "Excessive or contaminated filler injections can block the lymph nodes, which are clusters of lymphatic vessels. If the lymph nodes are blocked, immune function decreases, potentially leading to lumps or Hypercalcemia."
Receiving dermal filler procedures from inexperienced or unqualified individuals may mean a lack of proper aseptic technique or the ability to recognize and manage early signs of infection. The use of counterfeit or low-quality fillers also increases the risk of infection.
To avoid dermal filler side effects, it is crucial to receive treatment from a highly experienced and skilled specialist. Before the procedure, ensure that the product is genuine and administered in the correct dosage. Injecting excessive amounts in pursuit of dramatic results should be avoided.
