President Lee Returns After Super Week: Korea Achieves Historic Chairmanship of G20, APEC, and UN Security Council

After completing his official visits to four countries in Africa and the Middle East, President Lee Jae-myung returned to Korea on the morning of the 26th, arriving at Seoul Airbase in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, and greeting welcoming officials with a handshake. News1
President Lee Jae-myung concluded his 10-day, 7-night overseas tour across the Middle East and Africa and returned to Korea on the 26th. Following his return, President Lee plans to share the outcomes of strengthened international cooperation and intergovernmental exchanges achieved during the tour at upcoming Cabinet meetings.
While in the Republic of South Africa, President Lee attended the Group of Twenty (G20) summit and secured Korea's status as the host country for the 2028 G20 summit. He will serve as chair at the 2028 G20 summit. With this, President Lee is set to become the first Korean president to chair the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, and the G20 summit during his term.
During the first leaders' session of the G20 summit, held on the 22nd in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, the member states officially adopted the leaders' declaration at the suggestion of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The declaration specified that the United States will chair in 2026, the United Kingdom in 2027, and the Republic of Korea in 2028.
Oh Hyun-joo, the third deputy director of the National Security Office, stated, "By assuming the G20 presidency in 2028, marking the 20th anniversary of the G20 summit, Korea is expected to play a leading role in strengthening G20 cooperation on complex global issues."
