[The Financial News] It has been revealed that a man in Italy lived disguised as his deceased mother for several years in order to continue receiving her pension.
According to the New York Post and other foreign media outlets on the 26th, a man in his 50s, identified as A, hid the body of his mother, Graziella Dall'Olio (82), who died three years ago, in the laundry room and did not report her death.
A, a former nurse who is currently unemployed, collected about 53,000 euros (approximately $57,000) annually by receiving his mother's pension and rental income from three properties under her name.
According to reports, when his mother's ID expired earlier this month, A disguised himself as her and went to a government office. An employee, finding him suspicious, reported him to the police, exposing the fraud.
At the time, A wore a wig, a floral blouse, a skirt, and applied heavy lipstick and foundation to impersonate his mother. He also wore jewelry such as a pearl necklace and earrings.
A government office employee stated, "At first glance, she looked like an ordinary elderly woman, but her neck was thick, and the skin on her hands resembled that of a man, not an 80-year-old woman. There were also marks under the makeup that looked like shaving stubble."
The employee added, "We compared the old ID photo of Dall'Olio (A's mother) with the new one. While the impression was similar, the age and appearance did not match. Occasionally, the voice would drop to a lower, masculine tone."
Eventually, the employee reported the case to the police. When officers searched A's home, they discovered the mummified body of his mother in the laundry room. Local police stated, "There was no smell of decomposition or trace of bodily fluids on the corpse. It was completely dried and mummified. It appears that, over a long period after death, the body naturally dehydrated."
Investigators estimate that A's mother died about three years ago at the age of 82. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
A is currently under investigation for illegally concealing a body and fraudulently collecting pension payments.
