[The Financial News] It has been confirmed that a YouTuber who spread false information such as "many mutilated bodies are being found in Korea" on Japanese online communities has been questioned by the police.
On the 24th, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) Cyber Crime Investigation Unit announced that on the 21st, they summoned Mr. Cho, a man in his 30s, as a suspect for violating the Framework Act on Telecommunications.
Mr. Cho, known as the YouTuber 'Debo Jjang' with 960,000 subscribers, uploaded a video to his channel on the 22nd of last month titled, 'The Problem of Murders and Organ Trafficking by Chinese Criminals Entering Korea Without Visas Has Become Serious.'
Active in Japan, he is accused of posting false information in the video, such as '37 lower bodies have been found in Korea' and 'there are 150 ongoing secret investigations.'
During police questioning, Mr. Cho reportedly denied the allegations, claiming, 'I believed crimes committed by Chinese nationals were actually increasing and dangerous. I posted the video to raise awareness.'
The police believe that Mr. Cho's dissemination of false and manipulated information has caused public anxiety, led to social unrest, and damaged Korea's national image. The investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Framework Act on Telecommunications stipulates that anyone who transmits false communications via telecommunications facilities for the purpose of benefiting themselves or others, or causing harm to others, may be sentenced to up to three years in prison or fined up to 30 million won.
