A fire broke out on the third floor of a vehicle inspection center in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, leaving a firefighter unconscious while responding to the incident.
According to the Gyeonggi Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters, the blaze started around noon and was brought under control by dispatched firefighters in about one hour and twenty minutes.
Upon receiving the emergency call, fire authorities mobilized 20 vehicles and 56 personnel, arriving at the scene within five minutes. Fire Captain A, along with colleagues, proceeded to the third floor—the origin of the fire—to participate in the suppression efforts.
However, at approximately 12:27 p.m., just three minutes after the initial suppression was completed, the rescue team leader found Fire Captain A collapsed. He was transported to a nearby hospital while receiving CPR after suffering cardiac arrest, but remains unconscious.
A fire official explained, "Fire Captain A's heart rhythm has been restored, but he is still not breathing well and remains unconscious." The official added, "This situation arose during the suppression process after the initial response, and it is not believed to be an accident involving flames, heat, or a fall."
There were no civilian casualties in the fire, as all 11 people inside the building managed to evacuate on their own. Police and fire authorities are jointly investigating the cause of the fire and the circumstances that led to Fire Captain A's collapse.
