[Financial News] Son Heung-min, who rescued his team from the brink with a brace in the MLS Western Conference semifinal playoff, ended his short but impactful first season in the United States, swallowing the pain of a missed penalty in the shootout. Despite suffering muscle cramps, Son fought with determination until the very end. Though visibly disappointed, he emphasized his sense of responsibility and promised to aim for the championship next season.
After the 2025 MLS Cup Western Conference semifinal against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place in Vancouver on the 23rd (Korean time), Son Heung-min said at the press conference, "I'm very disappointed. Still, I'm proud of the team for working so hard to win." On the day, Son scored twice—once in the 60th minute and again in stoppage time—to level the score at 2-2 and force extra time. He especially recalled his stunning free-kick equalizer in stoppage time, saying, "It was the most important moment. I was really happy to score when it mattered most."
However, with the deadlock unbroken in extra time, Son Heung-min stepped up as the first kicker in the penalty shootout but missed his shot. LAFC ultimately lost 3-4 on penalties, falling short of reaching the conference final and ending their season.
Addressing his missed penalty, Son Heung-min revealed the pain he had kept hidden. "I had some muscle cramps late in extra time, and I still felt them when I stepped up for the penalty," he admitted. Still, he quickly added, "Everything is my responsibility," taking the blame for the team's defeat. Entering the press conference alongside goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, Son often covered his face in disappointment, but his fighting spirit—giving everything for the team until the very last moment—left a deep impression on fans.

After making a surprise move from Tottenham Hotspur Football Club to LAFC in August, Son Heung-min quickly established himself as one of the league's top stars alongside Lionel Messi and Thomas Müller, scoring 12 goals and providing 4 assists in 13 MLS matches.
Reflecting on his brief but intense first season in the United States, Son said, "It was truly fantastic. I received a warm welcome, and every moment was enjoyable." He continued, "I was proud to give everything I had while wearing this jersey." Son added, "Adapting to a new environment and league, and meeting new teammates, helped me grow both as a player and as a person. Although I still have room for improvement, the love I received made me realize I need to take on even greater responsibility."
Despite the disappointing ending, Son Heung-min expressed strong determination. "People talk about 'impact,' but ultimately, I came here to lift the trophy," he said. "Today, I didn't succeed, but next year, I want to win every competition. I'll make sure I'm in top condition to come back and win next season." With his unwavering commitment and lingering regret, Son Heung-min's first MLS season came to a close, leaving fans eager for what lies ahead.
