[The Financial News] The court presiding over the trial of former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, charged with aiding the leaders of an insurrection, announced its intention to re-detain the attorneys of former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who had previously been released after being detained for a courtroom disturbance.
On the 24th, Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 33, presided over by Chief Judge Jin Gwan Lee, made this statement during the trial of Han Duck-soo, who faces charges including aiding insurrection leaders and participating in key insurrection activities.
The court stated, 'There was a retrial for detention at the previous session, and the detention order will be enforced,' adding, 'We will confirm personal details through proper procedures and enforce the detention according to the requirements set by the detention center.' The court further explained, 'There was contempt of court during the closed detention hearing,' noting, 'One of the attorneys said to the court, "Are you challenging us? Let's see each other at the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO)." This act of contempt was not included in the previous detention order and will be addressed separately.'
The court also announced it would proceed with detention hearings for an individual in the gallery following the testimony of former President Yoon Suk Yeol at the previous session. According to the court, 'After the testimony of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, one person in the gallery shouted a slogan supporting the former president as he was leaving the courtroom and exited the court. The court considers this an escape following a courtroom disturbance and will conduct a separate detention hearing.'
The court issued a warning to those causing disturbances in the courtroom. It stated, 'If similar incidents occur again, anyone violating courtroom order will be immediately arrested as a flagrant offender and handed over to the police. The court will exercise its authority to strictly maintain order in the courtroom. For the two individuals involved in the current incident, we are discussing possible criminal charges.'
Previously, on the 19th, the court sentenced attorneys Ha-Sang Lee and Kwon Woo-hyun, representatives of former Minister Kim, to 15 days of detention after they refused to comply with an order to leave the courtroom following the denial of their request to accompany their client. However, due to the lack of confirmed personal details, they were released based on the detention center's decision to suspend enforcement. It is reported that both attorneys refused to answer questions regarding their personal information during the detention hearing. Subsequently, the defense issued a statement asserting that 'the detention itself is clearly unlawful,' maintaining their confrontational stance.
