[Financial News] In celebration of Han Kang’s Nobel Prize in Literature, the play 'The Story of December,' which inspired songs she wrote and composed herself, will return to the stage under its original title after two decades.
According to Theater Company Violet on the 24th, this production, which received acclaim at its 2005 premiere, will invite audiences back to the winter café from December 1 to 31 at Banjul Stage in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The venue is well known as a filming location for the drama ‘Reply 1988.’
'The Story of December' centers on a café of the same name, where eight individuals from different walks of life gather on a year-end night. The play unfolds a unique theatrical world interwoven with confessions, silences, love, and wounds. The stage is designed not just as a simple setting, but as a childhood home that stirs memories and serves as a sanctuary for the heart.
The cast features actors with experience across theater, film, and television. Nine performers—Lee Seung-yeon, Hong Seung-il, Joo Hwan Oh, Park Yoo-mil, Choi Sol-hee, Hyun-sung, Seung Yul Choi, Sim Mari, and Park Si Young—will delicately convey the warmth and melancholy of a winter night.
This production is directed by Choi Chang-keun of Theater Company Violet. He explained, “This revival after 20 years is a time to reflect on what we have lost and what we have held onto.” He added, “Throughout the play, there are artistic and philosophical references to Nobel laureate Octavio Paz, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Modern Japanese Theatre, and more. The characters’ lines touch on poetry, philosophy, and the mysteries of life, gently leaving the audience with lingering themes such as ‘the beauty of transience’ and ‘what disappears and what remains.’”
