[Financial News] As the Korean government secured a victory in the annulment proceedings related to the sale of Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) to the U.S.-based private equity firm Lone Star Funds, Kim Nam-hee of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) highlighted her husband's pivotal role in the case.
On the 19th, Kim wrote on her Facebook account that the government had won the annulment lawsuit against the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) ruling, which had ordered Korea to pay damages to Lone Star Funds for the delayed sale of KEB. She emphasized, “This news is especially meaningful to me because my husband, Kim Junwoo of Bae, Kim & Lee LLC (BKL), has represented the Korean government in both the arbitration and annulment proceedings for over a decade.”
Kim Junwoo is an expert in international arbitration and litigation, having represented Korea in the Lone Star Funds dispute since 2012. Kim Nam-hee is also a former BKL attorney who previously worked with People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD) and as a professor at Seoul National University School of Law (SNU Law). She joined the DPK ahead of the last general election and currently serves as a member of the National Assembly for Gwangmyeong.
Kim expressed, “This was a once-in-a-lifetime case for my husband, who devoted himself to it for many years. I witnessed his hard work firsthand, so I am truly delighted as both a Korean citizen and a family member that the outcome was so meaningful.” She added, “I also ask for applause for the officials at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and the attorneys who worked tirelessly for the national interest.”
In response to her post, Jung Sung-ho, Minister of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), commented, “He is an outstanding husband. Please convey my gratitude.” Cho Kuk, former interim leader of the Rebuilding Korea Party (RKP), also posted on Facebook, saying, “Let us remember attorney Kim Junwoo.”
