[The Financial News] In the United Kingdom, an 18-month-old baby suffered cardiac arrest and severe injuries, including fused lips, after mistakenly drinking drain cleaner, thinking it was milk.
According to international media including the Daily Mail on the 18th (local time), Sam Anwar Alshamery, an 18-month-old living in Birmingham, ingested drain cleaner in May while his mother was cleaning the bathroom. Sam's father explained, "He thought the bottle was milk."
Sam suffered burns to his airway, mouth, and tongue and was immediately taken to Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital. Upon arrival at the emergency room, he went into cardiac arrest for about three minutes and then received intensive care in the ICU for two months.
Due to complications from the burns, most of Sam's lips have fused together. He is currently unable to eat food by mouth.
Sam's parents have started a fundraising campaign to cover the substantial medical expenses.
Sam's father appealed, "Considering rent, food, and everything else, my wife and I are barely making ends meet. We need help."
