[The Financial News] A video showing a foreign female tourist traveling alone in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka being subjected to a rude sexual proposition and harassment by a local man has sparked outrage online.
According to reports from NDTV and other Indian media outlets on the 17th (local time), the suspect, a 23-year-old man identified as A, was arrested by Sri Lankan police that day.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 25. The victim made the incident public by posting a video on her Instagram, which caused widespread anger in the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
The victim, B, a New Zealand national, was traveling around the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka by driving her own autorickshaw. On the fourth day of her trip, B started her day with a sunrise swim, but her journey took a turn for the worse after encountering A.
At the time, A approached B on a scooter. As B tried to speed up, he overtook her and continued to follow.
The situation escalated when B stopped her autorickshaw for a drink. A, wearing a shirt emblazoned with the Sri Lankan flag, approached and abruptly asked if she would have sex with him.
B firmly refused. In response, A partially pulled down his pants, exposed himself, and began performing an obscene act. This was all captured on B’s camera.
B stated, "I don't want this to ruin my trip, but it has definitely shaken my confidence. Unfortunately, this is the price women sometimes pay for traveling alone. I am furious that this man made me feel this way."
She added, "I want to make it clear that this incident does not define the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The people I met here were incredibly kind and generous. This is the fault of one individual and does not represent the entire country."
Sri Lankan netizens who learned of the incident expressed anger, saying A had damaged the country’s image. On SNS, comments included, "Now the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka will be treated the same as India," and, "We have lost our only pride of being 'better than India.' This person deserves severe punishment."
