According to the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) on the 18th, the police have expanded the use of 'KICS-AI,' which has been piloted since July, to investigators at police stations nationwide as of 9 a.m. the previous day. This system leverages LG CNS's AI model, EXAONE, in conjunction with data from the Korea Information System of Criminal Justice Services (KICS), to support various investigative tasks.
KICS-AI’s core functions include providing key investigative issues and relevant case law, as well as generating drafts of investigative documents. Investigators can instantly access necessary procedures, guidelines, and statutes or precedents related to charges. The system can also automatically draft applications for seizure, search, and inspection warrants based on reports and case information, such as statements. For example, when an officer inputs a request for a search warrant to find drug evidence at a suspect’s residence, the AI generates the draft based on previous records.
Additional features include summarizing and organizing documents such as statements, a translation function to assist with foreign materials in international investigations, and a recommendation tool for referencing similar case reports at each stage of an investigation.
The police expect that introducing this AI will reduce repetitive tasks, enhance the speed and completeness of investigations, and improve overall investigative quality. There is also anticipation within the agency that the workload for investigators will decrease, leading to shorter case processing times.
The KNPA has established the 'Investigation Support AI Advancement Project Task Force,' led by the Director of Investigation Planning and Coordination, to identify detailed tasks and produce results through weekly meetings.
