The Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) announced that it will host the 11th International CSI Conference, the largest forensic science academic event in Korea, for two days starting on the 18th at the Science and Technology Convention Center in Seoul.
First launched in 2015, the International CSI Conference serves as a platform to introduce the latest forensic science information, techniques, equipment, and case studies, while also fostering international cooperation in law enforcement.
This year’s conference will bring together institutions and universities related to forensic science, including the National Forensic Service (NFS). International participants include law enforcement agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) from the United States, the Federal Criminal Police Office of Germany (BKA), and the Singapore Police Force (SPF), as well as forensic science experts from leading universities in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands.
The theme for this year is 'The Era of a Major Shift (FX) in Forensic Science: Innovation and Standardization.' The conference will discuss development strategies and future plans for a major transformation in forensic science through innovation and standardization, including the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). The event will be broadcast live online, allowing forensic science experts from Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Africa to participate.
Jaesung Yoo, Acting Commissioner General of the KNPA, stated, "Today, technological innovation is rapidly advancing, driven by digital transformation (DX) and the development of artificial intelligence (AX)." He emphasized, "To proactively respond to increasingly sophisticated crimes such as deepfakes, virtual asset money laundering, and organized transnational scams, innovation in forensic science technology and the strengthening of international cooperation are more crucial than ever."
The opening ceremony of the conference also featured an awards ceremony for the winners of the recently held 2nd International Fingerprint Examination Competition (IFEC) and the Forensic Science Academic Poster and Photography Contest.
In the 2nd International Fingerprint Examination Competition (IFEC), Kim Hong-joo, Inspector at the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency, won first place in the domestic category, while Inspector Koo Hwa-rang of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency took second. In the international category, Natjanan Songserm of the Royal Thai Police (RTP) won first place, and Ann-Katrin Feucht of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) in Germany placed second.
In the Forensic Science Academic Poster Contest, Inspector Oh Kang-wook from the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency received the top award for his poster on 'The Effects of Cognitive Interviewing on Psychophysiological Responses in Polygraph Examinations.' In the Forensic Science Photography Contest, Inspector Oh Jong-seong from the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency was awarded the grand prize for his photograph titled 'Bloodstain Group,' which captured forensic investigators analyzing bloodstain patterns.
