As the Christmas season approaches, major hotels in Korea are launching a series of high-priced cakes costing hundreds of thousands of won, intensifying competition. This year, cakes priced as high as 500,000 won have even made an appearance.
Analysts attribute this trend to the growing popularity of 'Small Luxury,' where consumers are willing to spend more for greater satisfaction, even if the price is high.
On the 17th, The Shilla Hotel announced it will offer five types of 'Holiday Special Cakes' for a limited time from December 24 to 31. Among them, 'The Finest Luxury' cake features rare seasonal truffles. Priced at 500,000 won, it sets a new record for the highest-priced cake.
Only up to three of these cakes will be sold per day. Previously, the most expensive hotel cake was 'The Taste of Luxury,' introduced last year by The Shilla Hotel at 400,000 won.
Other cakes offered by The Shilla Hotel include 'The Joyful Shilla Bear' (350,000 won), 'White Holiday' (180,000 won), 'Luminous Red' (165,000 won), and 'Noir Truffle Mini' (80,000 won).
Meanwhile, WALKERHILL HOTELS & RESORTS will begin accepting pre-orders for its 'Lumière Blanche' cake, priced at 380,000 won, starting December 1. Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas plans to launch its signature cake, 'Merry-Go-Round,' for 350,000 won, while the bakery 'Confections by Four Seasons' at Four Seasons Hotel Seoul will introduce its signature 'Diamond Four Seasons Reef' cake for 300,000 won.
Despite annual criticism over their high prices, luxury Christmas cakes from hotels continue to enjoy strong demand, with reservations often selling out quickly. Industry insiders explain this phenomenon as a reflection of the 'Small Luxury' consumption trend.
'Small Luxury' refers to a consumption trend where people seek psychological satisfaction through small indulgences, even during economic downturns. It is common for consumers to purchase gifts for themselves under 1 million won.
