[The Financial News] A man in his 60s, who was tried for fatally stabbing his son suffering from schizophrenia, has withdrawn his appeal to the Supreme Court of Korea, finalizing his 13-year prison sentence.
According to legal sources on the 17th, A (in his 60s), who was indicted on murder charges, submitted a petition to withdraw his appeal to the Supreme Court of Korea on the 13th. As a result, the original sentence of 13 years in prison was confirmed.
On February 17, A was accused of fatally stabbing his son B, who was in his 20s, on a street in Geumjeong-gu, Busan, around 5 p.m. Reports indicate that since October 2023, B, who suffered from schizophrenia, had become increasingly violent and had frequent conflicts with his parents.
It was also revealed that A was deeply troubled by the fact that B continued to verbally abuse his wife C, even though she was in poor health after undergoing cancer surgery.
On the day of the crime, A reportedly became enraged after receiving abusive calls and messages from B, and committed the act with a weapon he had prepared in advance.
A was initially sentenced to 13 years in prison in the first trial but appealed, claiming the sentence was excessive. The appellate court dismissed A's appeal.
The appellate panel stated, 'We understand the difficult circumstances that led to this incident, but it is hard to consider the original sentence as excessively harsh.'
