[Financial News] Jeon Kwang-hoon, pastor of Sarang Jeil Church and a suspect in the Seoul Western District Court disturbance, appeared before the police and denied all charges related to the incident.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) announced on the 18th that it had summoned Pastor Jeon as a suspect that morning to question him regarding charges of special trespassing and incitement to obstruct official duties. This is the first time the police have summoned Jeon for this case.
Before entering the police station, Jeon Kwang-hoon spoke to reporters and reiterated his previous stance, stating, "We have nothing to do with the Seoul Western District Court incident." He explained, "We concluded the Gwanghwamun rally at 7:30 p.m., and the riot at the court occurred at 3 a.m. the following day." He added, "I have led rallies in Gwanghwamun for 7 to 8 years, and I have always emphasized not to clash with the police or left-wing groups, so there have never been any incidents." He further claimed, "The disturbance was not caused by the Gwanghwamun group, but by others who went elsewhere and shouted."
Jeon also denied allegations that he was involved in sending a prison deposit to a suspect in the court riot. He stated, "I retired from the pastorate five years ago, so in reality, I am no different from an outside pastor." He continued, "A retired pastor has no authority, so how could I know about the church's finances or prison deposits?" Regarding the two special evangelists involved in the disturbance, he said, "They are not official church members. I only greeted them occasionally in the parking lot, and when I asked who they were, they said they were YouTubers from Gwangju," denying any connection or involvement.
Jeon Kwang-hoon also claimed that political forces are orchestrating the investigation against him. He said, "I have reasonable suspicion that the Presidential Senior Civil Affairs Office is directing this investigation," and criticized, "The police collapse even before the wind blows. The Republic of Korea is finished."
Police believe that Jeon Kwang-hoon is behind the riot incident that occurred at the Seoul Western District Court on January 19.
Previously, in August, police conducted search and seizure operations at Jeon’s parsonage, Sarang Jeil Church, and the offices and residences of six conservative YouTubers. In September, they also searched the office of Jeon's daughter and Lee Young-han, the senior pastor of Sarang Jeil Church.
On the 13th, police summoned Shin Hye-sik, the head of the YouTube channel Sinihan Su, for questioning. All other suspects and witnesses, including Shin and six others, have already been questioned.
After completing the investigation of Jeon Kwang-hoon, police will review whether to take him into custody.jyseo@fnnews.com Seo Ji-yoon Reporter
