The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced on the 16th that, starting from the 17th, it will strengthen the information provision features of the 'Piracy Risk Index' service available on the Comprehensive Maritime Safety Information System (GICOMS) website.
The Piracy Risk Index, which MOF has provided on its website since May last year, quantifies the risk of piracy in seven major global maritime regions. The risk levels are classified as Very High, High, Moderate, Low, or Special Risk Alert, depending on the degree of threat.
MOF initiated this upgrade to the Piracy Risk Index system in response to increasing instability in international affairs and a rising number of piracy incidents.
With this system enhancement, the Piracy Risk Index will now be linked with information on the location, summary, and type of damage for piracy incidents that have occurred in the past year. This allows users to intuitively identify zones with frequent incidents in each major maritime region.
In addition, if a domestic vessel enters a region where the Piracy Risk Index is classified as 'Very High,' both the shipping company and the vessel will receive immediate notifications with recommended actions.
Choi Sung-yong, Director General of Maritime Safety at MOF, stated, "Strengthening the information provision function of the Piracy Risk Index service is part of our proactive efforts to prevent piracy damage in a rapidly changing maritime safety environment." He added, "We will continue to closely monitor piracy incidents and further improve this service to protect the lives, property, and safety of our citizens."
