OpenAI has launched a pilot of its Group Chat feature in Korea, allowing multiple users to collaborate with ChatGPT in the same chat window. With Group Chat, friends, family, or colleagues can be invited into a single chat to plan together, make decisions, and develop ideas collectively.
According to OpenAI on the 14th, this pilot marks the initial stage of creating shared experiences within ChatGPT. Alongside Korea, the feature is being introduced in select countries including Japan, New Zealand, and Taiwan.
Through Group Chat, users can invite others and ChatGPT into a single conversation. For example, while planning a weekend trip with friends, a Group Chat can be created to compare destinations, draft itineraries, and generate packing checklists with ChatGPT’s assistance, allowing everyone to participate. The feature is also useful for choosing restaurants that suit everyone’s preferences or mediating light debates. It can facilitate collaboration when outlining projects or researching new topics with others. By sharing articles, notes, or questions, ChatGPT can help summarize and organize information.
To start a Group Chat, tap the person-shaped icon at the top right of a new or existing chat screen to add other users. Up to 20 participants can join, and invitations can be easily sent or accepted via a chat link.
Within Group Chat, ChatGPT’s responses are powered by the GPT-5.1 Auto model. Usage limits based on subscription plans apply only to ChatGPT’s responses, not to messages exchanged between users.
New social features have also been added. ChatGPT now follows the conversation flow and decides when to respond or remain silent based on the group’s context. When a reply is needed, simply mention 'ChatGPT.' Additionally, ChatGPT can react to chat messages with emojis.
Group Chat is completely separate from individual conversations, so personal ChatGPT memory is not shared with others. If users under 18 participate in Group Chat, ChatGPT automatically reduces exposure to sensitive content for the entire group to ensure safety. Parents or guardians can also disable the Group Chat feature using parental controls.
KyoungHoon Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, stated, “The Group Chat feature is the first step for ChatGPT to become a shared space for collaboration and communication with others. We will continue to improve the service based on user feedback from Korea and other pilot countries.”
