The 'joint fact sheet,' the outcome of the ROK-US customs and security negotiations, was finalized on the 14th. This comes just 16 days after President Lee Jae Myung and President Donald John Trump reached a consensus on key customs and security issues during the ROK-US summit held in Gyeongju on the 29th of last month.
At the Office of the President of the Republic of Korea in Yongsan, President Lee expressed his gratitude to the people, business leaders, and public officials, announcing that the fact sheet had been finalized.
President Lee declared, "A new renaissance for the ROK-US Alliance has begun," and emphasized that "the alliance has evolved into a future-oriented strategic comprehensive partnership."
He further stated, "President Donald John Trump's rational decision played a significant role," expressing his gratitude and respect for President Trump's bold leadership.
President Lee explained that both countries had agreed to pursue the construction of nuclear submarines. He added that discussions also included the possibility of US Armed Forces vessels being constructed in Korea.
He also highlighted that the US had expressed its support for Korea's authority to reprocess Spent Nuclear Fuel.
Regarding nuclear submarine construction in Korea, National Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac clarified, "The discussions were based on the premise that nuclear submarines would be built in Korea," and added, "Construction in the United States was not considered."
President Lee criticized the opposition for politicizing the delay in reaching the fact sheet agreement.
He explained, "The time taken to finalize the fact sheet was an unavoidable decision to safeguard the national interest." President Lee also stressed, "Regardless of political differences, there should be no undue domestic pressure when it comes to protecting the national interest."
During the briefing, President Lee also stated, "Through pragmatic, national interest-focused diplomacy, we will broaden the horizons of our foreign policy." He added, "We will work jointly with China to address factors that hinder Korea-China cooperation."
Additionally, President Lee emphasized, "We will strive to become one of the world's top three powers in Artificial intelligence (AI) and establish Korea as Asia's AI capital through collaborative translation initiatives."
