Chung Ki-sun of HD Hyundai is set to expand a ‘global partnership’ with the Government of India. He has emerged as a key partner for the ‘Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047,’ one of the Indian government’s core initiatives.
On the 13th, Chung met with Hardeep Singh Puri, India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province, to discuss ways to broaden mutual cooperation.
The meeting was attended by Gourangalal Das, Ambassador of India to Korea; Esha Srivastava, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas; Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC); Madhukar Nair, Chairman of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL); Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority, Gujarat; as well as CEOs of state-owned enterprises and key figures from the shipbuilding and shipping sectors.
Guided by Chung Ki-sun, the Indian delegation learned about HD Hyundai’s ship design and construction capabilities, as well as its smart shipyard operation systems. They explored detailed cooperation measures to enhance India’s shipbuilding capabilities, expand its fleet, and advance its technology.
India has set a plan to expand its merchant fleet from 1,500 to 2,500 vessels, aiming to become one of the world’s top five shipbuilding nations. The goal is to achieve self-reliance and strengthen competitiveness across the shipping, port, shipbuilding, and offshore plant industries. To this end, the Government of India plans to invest approximately $24 billion. In October, it also announced a support policy worth about $8 billion to boost new shipbuilding projects.
Previously, in July, HD Hyundai signed an MOU with Cochin Shipyard Limited, India’s largest state-owned shipbuilder. The two parties agreed to cooperate in various areas, including design and procurement support, productivity improvement, and human resource development. More recently, the scope of cooperation has expanded to naval ship projects, further strengthening their close relationship.
Chung Ki-sun stated, “Based on strong trust with India, HD Hyundai will become the best partner to support the development of India’s shipbuilding industry. We will continue to demonstrate global leadership for the sustainable growth of the shipbuilding and marine industries.”
Minister Hardeep Singh Puri commented, “HD Hyundai will be a crucial partner in realizing India’s maritime vision. I look forward to even more substantive cooperation through regular exchanges between the Government of India and HD Hyundai.”
On the 14th, the Indian delegation, consisting of government officials and CEOs of state-run oil and gas enterprises, will visit HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan shipyard to tour the merchant and special shipyards and observe shipbuilding operations.
