[Financial News] Kim Wan-ki, chief of Seoul Mapo Police Station, has filed a defamation lawsuit against a lawyer who claimed he "supported insurrection."
According to police and other sources on the 11th, Chief Kim submitted a complaint to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office the previous day, accusing lawyer Kim Kyu Hyun of defamation by spreading false information. Kim stated that the claim he said "I will support insurrection" during a rally in front of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea on December 3 last year is not true.
At that time, Chief Kim was deployed to the scene as head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency 8th Mobile Unit. He explained that he was "managing citizen safety amid a chaotic situation." He added, "Three lawmakers were accompanied by officers as they entered the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, and there was no instance of blocking access or allowing unauthorized entry."
Lawyer Kim Kyu Hyun, through his YouTube channel and social media, claimed, "On the night of December 3 last year, in front of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, when I told the police that 'preventing citizens from entering the National Assembly is tantamount to supporting insurrection,' Chief Kim responded, 'I will support insurrection.'" Kim Kyu Hyun added that while his phone battery was dead and he could not record the conversation, he clearly remembers the statement.
Subsequently, Kim Kyu Hyun filed a complaint against Chief Kim for engaging in important duties related to insurrection. The case was transferred to the Special Counsel for Insurrection and is currently under investigation. Chief Kim was questioned by prosecutors in March, but has not been summoned again during the special counsel's investigation.

There has also been public criticism of Chief Kim. More than 100 posts titled 'Commending the Police Chief Who Supported Insurrection' appeared on the Seoul Mapo Police Station website's bulletin board. However, most of these posts actually criticized Chief Kim.
Additionally, the Center for Military Human Rights Korea (CMHRK) issued a statement on the 7th, noting that "the statement 'I will support insurrection' by Chief Kim is included in the official record, and he is currently under investigation as a suspect," and called for his suspension.
A police official stated, "As this matter is under investigation by the authorities, we must wait for the outcome to be announced."
