[Financial News] The Special Prosecutor Team for Insurrection and Treason, led by Cho Eun-seok, has once again sought to secure the custody of former Minister of Justice Park Sung-jae, who is accused of assisting former President Yoon Suk Yeol in the illegal declaration of the 2024 South Korean Martial Law Declaration on December 3.
On the 11th, the special prosecutor team announced to the media that at approximately 11:50 a.m., it had reapplied for an arrest warrant for former Minister Park on charges of engaging in key insurrection duties and abuse of authority and obstruction of the exercise of rights.
The team's previous request for an arrest warrant for former Minister Park was denied by the Seoul Central District Court on the 15th of last month. At that time, Jungho Park, the judge in charge of warrants, stated there was room for dispute regarding the awareness of illegality, and dismissed the application. The special prosecutor team believed that former Minister Park had given orders for the dispatch of prosecutors and inspection of detention center capacity despite knowing the martial law was illegal, but this perspective was challenged by the court.
In response, over the past month, the special prosecutor team has strengthened its case for the necessity of detaining former Minister Park, including expanding the scope of forensic analysis of his mobile phone.
