[Financial News] Hak Ja Han, President of the Unification Church, who was indicted and detained on charges of church-state collusion, has requested an extension of her suspension of detention.
According to the legal community on the 7th, Han's legal team submitted an application for an extension of the suspension of detention to Criminal Division 27 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Insung Woo) the previous day.
Previously, on the 4th, the court conditionally approved Han's request for suspension of detention due to health reasons, allowing it until 4 p.m. on the 7th. During this period, Han reportedly underwent glaucoma surgery and received inpatient treatment at a hospital.
A suspension of detention is a system that allows temporary release of a defendant in cases of serious illness, childbirth, or urgent family matters such as funerals. As a result, Han will remain temporarily released until 4 p.m. on the 7th.
The decision takes effect immediately, and unlike bail (which requires a deposit or other conditions), there is no requirement to pay a security deposit.
Han is accused of delivering 100 million won to Kwon Seong-dong, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, in 2022 through Yoon Young-ho, former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters. She is also suspected of being involved in lobbying First Lady Kim Keon Hee by delivering Chanel bags and other items through Jeon Sung-bae, also known as Geonjin Beopsa, between April and July of the same year. Additional charges include violating the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, embezzling church funds to purchase Chanel bags and other goods, and instructing Yoon to destroy evidence in anticipation of an investigation into her alleged overseas gambling.
