[Financial News] Former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn has filed a recusal request against the police officers in charge of investigating his alleged illegal electioneering activities.
Park Joo-hyun, legal counsel for Hwang, announced on Facebook on the 6th that a recusal request had been submitted against officers from the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Metropolitan Investigation Unit under the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA).
Park cited several reasons for the recusal: attempts at unlawful investigation through deception, illegal acts during search and seizure procedures, attempts to draft false statements, invasion of privacy of witnesses' families, and politically motivated targeted investigations.
Park claimed that officers lured Dr. Wi Geum-Suk to an underground parking lot with a false message about a car being scratched in order to seize her mobile phone, and that a similar threat was made to Professor Mi-Ran Seo. Park further alleged that the officers falsely stated that the court had fully granted the warrant, when in fact it was only partially approved, and executed the warrant at a different location without obtaining a new one, thus violating warrant procedures.
He also argued that listing Hwang's online posts about election fraud as criminal acts revealed political intent, raising reasonable doubts about the fairness of the investigation.
On the 24th of last month, the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the SMPA conducted a search and seizure of the Anti-Election Fraud and Corruption Task Force, an organization led by Hwang. Police believe Hwang used the nationwide network of the task force to carry out election campaign activities.
In May, the National Election Commission (NEC) filed a complaint against Hwang and the task force for violating the Public Official Election Act. In August, police also searched the task force's office and secured related materials.
