[Financial News] A man in his 30s who struck and killed a Canadian pedestrian while driving under the influence in Gangnam, Seoul, has been referred to the prosecution in custody.

On the 6th, the Seoul Gangnam Police Station announced that on the 3rd, a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, was referred to the prosecution in custody on charges of drunk driving and causing death by dangerous driving under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.

On the evening of the 25th of last month, at around 9:40 p.m., Mr. A was arrested at the scene after hitting two pedestrians crossing at a crosswalk in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam District, while driving under the influence. At the time, his blood alcohol concentration was at a license-revoking level.

According to police, among those struck by the car, a Korean-Canadian man in his 30s was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but ultimately died. A Korean woman in her 20s sustained serious injuries and is reportedly recovering.

Police also plan to refer a male passenger in his 30s, who failed to stop Mr. A from driving drunk, to the prosecution without detention on charges of aiding and abetting drunk driving.

Previously, on the 2nd, a Japanese tourist mother and daughter were hit by a drunk driver while crossing at a crosswalk near Dongdaemun Station in Jongno District. The mother, in her 50s, died in the accident, while her daughter in her 30s was injured.

The Seoul Hyehwa Police Station applied for an arrest warrant for the driver, a man in his 30s surnamed Seo, and the court issued the warrant the previous day, citing concerns about flight risk.
