[Financial News] President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, was sexually harassed by an intoxicated man on the street.
According to the Associated Press and other sources on the 4th (local time), President Sheinbaum was sexually harassed by a drunk man on a street in Mexico City.
At the time, President Sheinbaum was walking from the Presidential Palace to the Federal Ministry of Education with her aides. She paused to greet citizens and was then assaulted.
A video of the incident was recorded and widely shared on social media.
The footage shows a man approaching President Sheinbaum from behind, reaching out to touch her upper body and bringing his face close to the back of her neck.
A man, believed to be a security officer, quickly intervened to restrain the perpetrator. President Sheinbaum can be heard reassuring those around her, telling them not to worry, while maintaining her composure.
The day after the incident, on the 5th (local time), President Sheinbaum explained at a regular press conference, “Yesterday (the 4th), while walking from the Presidential Palace to the Ministry of Education, I felt someone approaching me. I realized he was completely drunk.”
She continued, “He committed a crime against me, and for the sake of everyone, I have filed charges against the man.”
She emphasized, “This is something I have experienced as a Mexican woman. Even before becoming president, when I was a student, I faced similar incidents. If I do not press charges, what message does that send to all Mexican women?”
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada issued a statement, noting, “The president emphasized after her election that all women have ‘arrived.’ This means we have reached a certain level of gender equality and women’s rights, dreaming of a country where the word ‘woman’ is not synonymous with fear.” She added, “This is a promise not to tolerate misogyny hidden in social practices.”
She further stated, “Touching one person means touching everyone. The suspect has already been arrested and will be dealt with according to the law.”
Local media questioned the effectiveness of the presidential security system, while also noting that the incident could strengthen calls from residents for tougher public safety measures.
Meanwhile, President Sheinbaum became the first woman in Mexico’s 200-year constitutional history to be elected president last June.
