Financial News Yongin – Yongin announced on the 5th that it has signed a business agreement with Yongin Severance Hospital to promote a 'self-driving car pilot project.'
This agreement was arranged to define the terms of cooperation with Yongin Severance Hospital as the city plans to launch a self-driving car pilot operation next year in the Yongin (Dongbaek) Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Operation Zone, which was designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) in Dongbaek 2-dong, Giheung-gu last December.
After initiating a self-driving car operation service in July, the city is preparing to operate two 14-seater self-driving cars every 15 minutes on a 5-kilometer route connecting Yongin Severance Hospital, Dongbaek Station, Dongbaek Library, and E-Mart Dongbaek Branch starting in January next year.
Under the agreement, the city will be responsible for overall administrative procedures, infrastructure construction, and operation of the self-driving car pilot project. Yongin Severance Hospital will support the project by providing necessary facilities such as charging stations and covering part of the operating costs, aiming to ensure citizens’ mobility rights and promote the introduction of self-driving vehicles.
At the signing ceremony, Mayor Lee Sang-il stated, "With the advancement of cutting-edge technologies, the era of artificial intelligence has arrived, and the mobility sector is expected to undergo significant changes as these technologies are applied. It is very meaningful that, starting in January next year, the city will be able to launch a pilot operation in cooperation with Yongin Severance Hospital in the area designated as a self-driving car pilot operation zone last year."
He added, "Once the self-driving car pilot operation begins, it will provide transportation convenience for residents traveling to and from Yongin Severance Hospital in the Dongbaek area, and it will also serve as a practical test for the expansion potential of self-driving technology. I hope this pilot project will proceed smoothly and lead to more initiatives that enhance transportation convenience for citizens in other areas as well."
