LS ELECTRIC announced on the 5th that it has obtained certification from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), which is essential for exporting to the United States, for its latest Power Conversion System (PCS) products—key components of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). On the 4th, an award ceremony for the 'UL 1741' certificate was held at the LS ELECTRIC Anyang Global R&D Campus. The event was attended by Jangcheol Seo, Head of Power R&D Division and CTO at LS ELECTRIC, and Wesley Kwok, Executive Vice President of Renewable Energy and Industrial Automation (EIA) at UL Solutions.
The certified product is the second-generation PCS of the Modular Scalable String Platform (MSSP), developed by LS ELECTRIC to target the global industrial ESS market. By modularizing the Power Electronic Building Block (PEBB), the system allows for parallel connections and scalable power conversion capacity. The adoption of a water-cooling structure enables stable cooling even in high-output environments. When using the water-cooled MSSP, both the battery and PCS can be cooled simultaneously, facilitating temperature control and enhancing battery performance.
UL is a U.S.-based nonprofit testing organization that evaluates electrical safety and fire risks to certify product safety. Obtaining UL certification is mandatory for selling electrical products in the United States. Among these, UL 1741 certification applies to power conversion systems, inverters, and other distributed power systems.
In the certification process, LS ELECTRIC passed all 52 test items, including overload, short-circuit, uninterruptible operation, and standalone operation tests, to simultaneously meet the diverse regulatory and certification requirements of regions such as California, Hawaii, and Canada.
LS ELECTRIC plans to further accelerate its efforts to penetrate the North American ESS market. With the expansion of renewable energy and growing demand for grid stabilization, the ESS market in North America is rapidly expanding. To actively enter the North American market, LS ELECTRIC began securing UL certifications in earnest in 2014 and has since obtained over 300 UL certifications.
A representative from LS ELECTRIC stated, "Based on local certifications, we plan to expand our tailored solutions to target a wide range of customers, from large-scale power plant ESS to commercial and industrial ESS."
