[Financial News] The Korean ramen selected by Japanese gourmet experts as the best to pair with rice was neither the iconic Shin Ramyun nor the globally popular Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen. Instead, it was Nongshim Squid Jjamppong, which was praised for its “deep seafood flavor and chewy texture that go beyond just spiciness.”
Nikkei recently reported that its weekend supplement, Nikkei Plus 1, released a ranking of the 'Top 10 Asian Instant Noodles That Go Well with Rice.' The selection involved numerous Japanese culinary researchers, food culture experts, and instant noodle enthusiasts, who meticulously evaluated taste, texture, and aroma.
The panel highly praised Nongshim Squid Jjamppong, describing it as a “seafood soup with thick, chewy noodles,” and ranked it third overall. They especially noted that the chewy noodles and the rich seafood broth created a perfect pairing with rice.
Singapore’s Laksa Ramen and Taiwan’s Man Han Da Chan Braised Beef Noodles took first and second place, respectively.
Nongshim is known to use squid extract and seafood paste instead of artificial flavors to enhance the taste of Squid Jjamppong. By reducing sodium content while boosting umami, the company helps foreign consumers easily experience Korea’s ‘broth culture.’ The thick, springy noodles and real squid pieces add to its appeal, reminiscent of authentic jjamppong.
