[Financial News] Police have summoned Kim Young-hwan, Governor of North Chungcheong Province, over suspicions of perjury during the Investigation of State Administration into the Osong Underpass Disaster.
Yeongdeungpo Police Station announced that at 2 p.m. on the 4th, Kim would be questioned as a suspect on charges of violating the Act on Testimony and Appraisal before the National Assembly.
Upon arriving at the police station, Kim briefly told reporters, "I will undergo the investigation with confidence and sincerity, telling the truth as it is."
Kim is accused of providing false testimony during the Investigation of State Administration held last September, including claims that he monitored the underpass via CCTV on the day of the Osong Underpass Disaster and made phone calls to more than ten locations.
On October 25, the Security and Public Administration Committee, led by the ruling party, adopted the final report on the Investigation of State Administration into the Osong Underpass Disaster and passed a motion to refer Kim to prosecutors for alleged perjury.
The Act on Testimony and Appraisal before the National Assembly stipulates that witnesses who provide false statements before the National Assembly may face imprisonment for a term of one to ten years.
The previous day, Kim presided over a staff meeting at the provincial council’s multipurpose conference room, stating, "No public official or resident should suffer even slightly because of matters surrounding me. I will bear all burdens and hardships myself," and emphasized, "No difficulty should be allowed to disrupt the administration of the province."
