[Financial News] A man in his 50s who assaulted a responding police officer and damaged property at a police station has received a suspended prison sentence.
On the 4th, according to the legal community, the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 13 (Single Judge), presided over by Judge Kim Sung-eun, sentenced a man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, to six months in prison with a two-year suspended sentence for charges including damage to public property and obstruction of official duties. The court also ordered him to complete 80 hours of community service.
Mr. A was indicted for assaulting a police officer who responded to a report, and for damaging chairs in the waiting area and detention facilities at the police station after being arrested.
In August, Mr. A was reported for allegedly harassing a Yogurt Lady in a park in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. When a police officer dispatched after a call to the 112 Police Emergency Number asked for his identification, Mr. A hurled profanities and struck the officer in the face. Even after being arrested and placed in the patrol car, he spat several times on the back of the officer’s head and face, and threatened, "You, your wife, and your baby are all dead."
Mr. A’s rampage did not stop there. Upon arrival at the police station, he tore off two chair covers in the criminal investigation waiting room. Later that afternoon, he tore off another chair cover, causing approximately 400,000 won in repair costs. During this process, he kicked an officer who tried to restrain him in the abdomen and struck another officer, who was handcuffing him, on the buttocks.
Subsequently, Mr. A also ripped off a soundproof cushion from the detention room door, resulting in about 330,000 won in damages.
The court stated, "The defendant obstructed official duties by verbally abusing and using force against a police officer dispatched to handle a reported incident, and damaged property used by a government office. The nature of these offenses is extremely poor." The court added, "Strict punishment is necessary to establish the rule of law and eradicate the tendency to disregard public authority."
The court further noted, "The victims wish for the defendant to be punished, and the defendant has a previous conviction for a similar offense. However, the sentence was determined in consideration of favorable factors, such as the defendant admitting to and reflecting on his actions, and making efforts to repair the damage, including completing repairs to the damaged public property."
