Prime Minister Kim Min-seok: “2035 NDC Must Be an Achievable Target”

Kim Min-seok, Prime Minister of South Korea, along with Koo Yun-cheol, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Economy and Finance, and Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister for Science and Minister of Science and ICT (MSIT), discussed the establishment of the 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for greenhouse gas reduction.
On the morning of the 2nd, Prime Minister Kim presided over the '3+α Meeting' at the Prime Minister's residence in Seoul, stating, "We must set a responsible and achievable reduction target."
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Koo, Deputy Prime Minister Bae, Kim Jung-kwan, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Kim Sung-hwan, Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment, Kim Yun-duk, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), and Yoon Chang-ryeol, Chief of the Office for Government Policy Coordination.
Participants focused on adjusting the target level based on the reduction potential of each sector and the current industrial and technological conditions.
In accordance with the Paris Agreement, South Korea must submit its 2035 greenhouse gas reduction target to the United Nations within this year. To date, over 60 of the 195 parties have already submitted their targets.
Since September, the government has held six public forums and continued inter-ministerial consultations. Based on the outcomes of this meeting, the government will conduct sectoral impact analyses, additional public hearings, and further discussions at the 2050 Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee before finalizing the target through deliberation and resolution at the State Council of the Republic of Korea.
The '3+α Meeting' is an inter-ministerial consultative body supporting the Prime Minister's coordination of the Cabinet. It was launched on the 2nd of last month, and this was its second session.
