At the APEC Summit Session 2 retreat held in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, on the 1st, President Lee Jae Myung declared, “South Korea will realize a 'Global AI Basic Society' where all of humanity can equally benefit from technological advancement.”
President Lee stated, “South Korea is focusing its capabilities on building an innovative AI ecosystem and is driving a nationwide AI transformation. By expanding large-scale AI Data Center infrastructure, nurturing talent, revitalizing the industrial ecosystem, and improving regulations, we are creating an environment where global companies can freely innovate.”
He emphasized, “Above all, the most important principle is to establish an AI Basic Society where technological innovation leads to inclusive growth—AI for everyone. South Korea will adopt this as its core vision and steadily implement related policies.”
President Lee further explained, “The APEC AI Initiative proposed by South Korea reflects our determination to turn the sweeping changes brought by AI into opportunities. The Asia-Pacific AI Center, which South Korea is working to establish, will contribute to strengthening regional capabilities by facilitating AI policy exchange and bridging gaps.”
He added, “In addition to AI, demographic changes caused by low birth rates and an aging population pose serious challenges. I propose a joint response framework at the APEC level to seek solutions to demographic issues using AI technology.”
President Lee also noted, “The creativity of the cultural industry and the power of exchange are driving forces that go beyond economic value, strengthening understanding and solidarity among member economies. Let us work together to create new growth engines and dynamism in the Asia-Pacific region through the three pillars of AI, demographics, and culture.”
