[Financial News] Inmates in their 20s who assaulted a fellow detainee in a group at a detention center have been sentenced to prison terms.
According to legal sources on the 2nd, the Seoul Southern District Court’s Criminal Division 13 (Presiding Judge Kim Sung-eun) sentenced two men in their 20s, Mr. A and Mr. B, to four months in prison each for violating the Act on the Punishment of Violent Acts, etc. (joint assault).
They were brought to trial on charges of assaulting a fellow detainee together with another inmate in the same cell at the detention center.
Mr. A and Mr. B were inmates at the Seoul Southern Detention Center. In mid-April, Mr. C, who was in the same cell, approached the victim from behind in front of the restroom after dinner, wrapped his left arm around the victim’s neck, and pulled his own left arm with his right hand to choke the victim. Although the victim asked him to stop, Mr. C grabbed the victim’s clothes with both hands, tripped him to the floor, and twisted his arm.
Mr. A and Mr. B, who witnessed this, joined in the assault. Mr. A trapped the victim’s left arm between his legs to restrain him, while Mr. B clamped the victim’s left ankle under his armpit and twisted it, according to the investigation.
On the 17th of the same month, they assaulted the victim again using a similar method. Mr. C, in front of the restroom, used his left hand to pull a comb held in his right hand and struck the victim’s cheek. He then grabbed the victim’s clothes with both hands, tripped him to the floor, and twisted his arm. Mr. A and Mr. B also participated, restraining the victim and twisting his ankle, among other acts of assault.
The court stated, “The defendants committed this offense against another inmate in the detention center during the repeat offender period without showing restraint, making their actions highly blameworthy. However, considering that the defendants have admitted to and reflected on their actions, and that the victim has expressed no desire for punishment, the sentences were determined accordingly.”
