A forensic investigator recently hired by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) was found to be a member of the Chae Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Team, led by Lee Myeong-hyeon. The special prosecutor team has taken measures to prevent this investigator from accessing any CIO-related investigation materials.
According to legal sources on the 30th, Investigator A, who has been working as a forensic specialist with the special prosecutor team, was recently recruited by the CIO as a forensic expert. Investigator A is scheduled to transfer to the CIO after the special investigation concludes, starting in mid-November.
The special prosecutor team is currently investigating allegations that former CIO Deputy Chief Prosecutors Song Changjin and Kim Sun-kyu interfered with the investigation into the death of Sergeant Chae. Concerns have been raised about the appropriateness of a team member transferring to an organization under investigation.
On this day, the special prosecutor team stated, "After receiving final confirmation of acceptance from the CIO, the forensic investigator informed us, so we learned about it belatedly. The investigator will remain with the special prosecutor team until the end of November. During the remaining investigation period, we plan to ensure the investigator cannot access any CIO-related case materials."
The special prosecutor team plans to summon and question Oh Dong-woon, head of the CIO, on the 31st. Oh is suspected of delaying the investigation by not reporting the case of former Deputy Chief Prosecutor Song Changjin's alleged perjury before the National Assembly to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office. Although Oh's side has not confirmed attendance, the special prosecutor team expects the questioning to proceed as scheduled.
Meanwhile, the special prosecutor team also summoned Im Seong-geun, former commander of the 1st Marine Division, who is currently in custody, to question him on charges of occupational negligence resulting in death or injury. He is expected to be summoned again on the 31st for further questioning regarding alleged lobbying for leniency. Im previously refused to testify before being detained but has since made some statements, although he reportedly refused to testify again during the latest questioning.
Wankyu Lee, newly appointed former head of the Ministry of Government Legislation (MOLEG), accompanied Im as his defense attorney during the questioning. On his way to the special prosecutor's office, Lee stated, "I took on this case because I felt that Im Seong-geun has been subjected to a witch hunt by public opinion, and I want to help ensure he receives a fair trial according to proper legal procedures."
