[Financial News] Naver Corporation, the largest portal in South Korea, has come under scrutiny after its artificial intelligence (AI) search labeled Dokdo as Japanese territory. When users search for 'Japanese territory' or similar terms, the AI response treats Dokdo as part of Japan.
Seo Kyung-deok, a professor at Sungshin Women's University, said on the 30th, "I learned about this through a tip from a netizen. Upon checking, I found that searching for 'Japanese territory' prompts the AI to state, 'Japan's territory consists of Dokdo (Takeshima), the Northern Territories, and the Senkaku Islands,' among others."
Furthermore, searching for 'Japanese territory' also lists Dokdo (Takeshima) as part of Japan's main territories. The source for this answer is the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The response directly quotes the Japanese position and even includes the phrase 'currently in a territorial dispute with South Korea.'
Professor Seo explained, "Most foreign-developed AIs, such as ChatGPT, have consistently described Dokdo as a disputed area, and I have continuously raised objections." He criticized, "It is unacceptable that the nation's leading portal failed to verify such a critical national issue." Seo emphasized, "Naver Corporation must address this issue promptly to prevent misunderstandings about Dokdo among international users."
