On the 29th at the Gyeongju Arts Center in North Gyeongsang Province, President Lee Jae Myung met with Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS).
During the meeting, CEO Garman announced plans to invest over $5 billion by 2031 to build new AI Data Centers in Incheon and Gyeonggi Province. In June of this year, Amazon.com, Inc. had already announced a $4 billion investment in an AI Data Center in Ulsan Metropolitan City. With this new large-scale investment, Amazon.com, Inc. has once again set a new record for the largest Greenfield investment in the country's history.
President Lee stated, "The Korean government is actively working to build an 'AI Highway' so that AI can be utilized at any time in both industry and research, with the goal of becoming one of the world’s top three AI powers." He added, "Amazon.com, Inc.'s decision to make an additional large-scale investment in AI Data Centers will further accelerate the development of Korea's AI ecosystem."
He continued, "I hope Amazon.com, Inc. will strengthen partnerships with domestic companies and create diverse models of cooperation as it pursues its business in Korea. The Korean government will also actively serve as a 'bridge for prosperity' to move forward with global business leaders."
Following his meeting with CEO Garman, President Lee attended the 'Global Corporate Investment Partnership' event starting at 10:30 a.m.
The event was attended by Matt Garman of AWS and representatives from seven other global companies. They announced plans to invest a total of $9 billion over the next five years—including AWS’s investment—in advanced and key industries such as AI Data Centers, semiconductor packaging, electric vehicles (EVs), display materials, medical devices, and battery materials.
The global company representatives emphasized to President Lee that Korea is a crucial hub for their global business strategies. They noted that these investment plans will expand production capacity in Korea and further accelerate technological innovation.
Through one-on-one meetings, President Lee expressed his gratitude to the global company leaders who chose Korea—renowned for its world-class manufacturing base, ICT capabilities, outstanding talent, and the Korean Wave—as their optimal investment destination. He reaffirmed the Lee Jae Myung administration’s strong support for foreign investment.
